(Years 3 - 8)
Tuesday 4:40pm - 6:00pm
11 x Sessions starting Tuesday 15th September 2026 and last party session on Tuesday 8th December 2026
This is where we introduce and develop key skills, core techniques and good habits that ensure safe riding. It caters for those new to riding through to those who have potentially have some basic knowledge prior but are still building riding confidence. The coaches know that the riders may require prompts and support to master level pedals, a neutral body position, standing whilst riding and keeping the head up to ensure bike control.
The children are guided to start and stop off-road journeys with support, pedalling over a specified distance with no support. They learn to stop the bike when commanded, with control, using brakes. They will be introduced to how to corner on flat terrain without putting a foot down and to recognise basic obstacles, such as slightly undulating terrain, branches on the ground, and shown how to negotiate around them or over them.
The session will include riding for short distances up to a mile, and takes place entirely on the Duke of Kents private trails and skills track.
What to bring: A Mountain Bike (riders are welcome to leave their bikes in our locked container and parents will have an access code), a mountain bike helmet (no BMX helmets) and gloves – in full working order, appropriate clothing (long trousers) and footwear including waterproof jacket (please be aware that clothing and shoes can get muddy by the end of the session so a change of clothes may be handy). Snacks and a drink.
We will conduct a safety check on all bikes and advise on correct set up before every course.
We have a fleet or Specialized hire bikes and helmets if required.
Regardless of age, ability or skill level the Trail Academy is here to help. It is our aim to make all our classes as fun and progressive as possible.
We want everyone to learn at their own pace and have fun while doing it!

ADVANCED TRAIL RIDING – TECHNIQUE, FLOW & SPEED led by our coach Oli, World Cup elite enduro racer.
PLEASE NOTE: THIS SESSION IS FOR ADVANCED RIDERS ONLY.
Riders must be confident and experienced on challenging mountain bike trails. Sessions involve a fast pace, technical downhill terrain, jumps (including gaps) and varied trail features.
If you are unsure whether this session is suitable for your rider, please email zoe@thetrailacademy.co.uk before booking.
These sessions are designed for experienced riders who already have a strong foundation in mountain bike skills, including body positioning, cornering, braking and bike control across a variety of terrain.
Our coaches will help riders take their riding to the next level, developing the skills, confidence and trail knowledge to ride more smoothly, efficiently and faster.
WHAT WILL RIDERS LEARN?
● How to read the trail ahead, choose good lines and carry speed.
● How to tackle different trail features with greater confidence and control.
● Developing cornering technique to find more grip, flow and speed.
● Improving body movement and bike positioning over roots, rocks, drops and technical terrain.
● Tackling tech sections of trail, off-camber sections and flat corners.
● Improving jumping technique, including larger features and gaps.
● How to manage speed, balance and grip on steep and technical descents.
A big part of the session is helping riders become more confident and independent on the trails. Our coaches will introduce riders to great routes around the Surrey Hills, showing them how to link trails together, choose the right lines and tackle different sections smoothly and confidently.
Riders will learn routes they can come back and ride again with their friends, giving them the knowledge and confidence to explore, improve and get more out of their riding long after the session has finished.
Sessions can cover distances of up to 10 miles and start on The Trail Academy’s private site before heading off into the surrounding Surrey Hills.
